Opening Scripture
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
—John 14:27
Introduction
Jesus’ peace is different from the fleeting calm offered by the world. It is enduring, transcendent, and deeply rooted in His presence. As we anticipate the celebration of His birth, let us reflect on what it means to welcome His peace into our hearts and lives.
Reflection
The peace Jesus offers is not the absence of conflict or trouble but the presence of His Spirit, anchoring us in hope and love. Blaise Pascal observed, “All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Yet true peace and happiness come only through God.” The world promises peace through achievements, possessions, or temporary distractions, but these fail to address the restless human heart.
C.S. Lewis described it well: “God cannot give us happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.” Christ’s peace flows from union with Him—a gift rooted in His finished work on the cross and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
N.T. Wright reminds us that the peace of Christ is “not simply the absence of conflict but the active, flourishing presence of God’s justice and joy.” This peace is ours even amidst uncertainty. I remember a season of turmoil in my life when I clung to Jesus’ promise in John 14:27. Though external challenges remained, my soul found a quiet confidence that only He could provide.
This Advent, pause to rest in the assurance that His peace is not dependent on circumstances but on His unchanging character.
Connection to Practice
1. Lectio Divina: Meditate on John 14:27. Reflect on each phrase, asking God to reveal His peace to your heart.
2. Journaling: Write about a time you experienced Christ’s peace. What made it unique?
Question for Reflection
How can you make space in your heart and life to experience the peace of Christ this Advent season?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace,
You came into the world to bring us reconciliation with God our Father and with one another. Fill my heart with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Help me to trust You in every circumstance and reflect Your peace to those around me. Let Your presence be my refuge and strength today and always. Amen.
